Bilingual Child Development

Did you know that 20% of children in the United States speak a language outside of English? In the United States, there are more than 60 million people, aged 5 and over, speaking a language other than English at home?

Bilingual children are said to be the smartest and fastest learners due to the fact that they have learned dual languages at an early age. According to healthychildren.com, “Just like other children, most bilingual children speak their first words by age one.  By age two, most bilingual children can use two-word phrases. These are the same developmental milestones for children who learn only one language.

As mentioned before, bilingual children have two phonologies (sound systems) and two vocabularies. When learning how to speak in their foreign language alongside the English language, it’s best to start children off by reading bilingual books. These type of books serve as wonderful assets in building a solid foundation in creative thinking.
